The Book Fairy™ is the first in a series of books and characters designed to inspire the next generation of readers. Lily, the Book Fairy™ is an enchanting character that lives in our homes, libraries and schools. Her job is to help children develop a lifelong passion for books so that they may access the joy and benefits of reading everyday.
The idea for the Book Fairy™ began when creator, Melanie Bunch, heard a story on talk radio about the high illiteracy rates in the United States. She thought, “How can we have so many resources in our country, and yet have so many citizens who can’t read a menu, fill out a job application, or worse yet, not be able to read a simple children’s book to a child?” She immediately drew inspiration from her cousin Dawn, who was the principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School. To encourage her students to read, Dawn would dress up as the “Book Fairy”™ visiting classroom to classroom, granting students additional reading time. Melanie thought, “Everyone needs a book fairy!” – and the idea was born!

ILLITERACY HAS MET ITS MATCH:
While the Book Fairy™ is here to help boost your child’s learning potential through the exploration of books and reading, she also has another important job…eradicating illiteracy.
THE CHALLENGE:
Imagine not being able to read. That idea is a reality for 93 million Americans. The Book Fairy™ was developed to halt illiteracy and get children excited about reading. Simply put, children need to read in order to reach their full potential. Embracing reading early can help lay the groundwork for children to succeed in school, become confident learners and communicators, and to make the most of future social and economic opportunities. The Book Fairy™ is a key partner in this process, by making reading fun and inspiring the next generation of lifelong readers!
THE CREATIVE SOLUTION:
By purchasing the Book Fairy™, you are not only encouraging a love of reading – you are also fighting illiteracy and educational disparities in the US.
What would you do if you could not read a job application, a street sign or product label, or a simple text or email? While this is a crippling reality for many, illiteracy is often a secret struggle. It’s time to take action and assist the millions of children and adults who are affected by illiteracy. For each Book Fairy™ sold, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to community organizations in the United States that are working to ensure that people of all ages and backgrounds learn to read!
The Nation

• Illiteracy costs American taxpayers an estimated $20 billion each year
• School dropouts cost our nation $240 billion in social service expenditures and lost tax revenues
Impact on Society:
• 3 out of 5 people in American prisons can’t read
• 85% of juvenile offenders have problems reading
• Approximately 50% of Americans read so poorly that they are unable to perform simple tasks such as reading prescription drug labels
